said. "They come to Lincoln because it's a great environment. This is a small town with a square. Places like that are hard to find these days."

Helm attended the festival with his wife, who prepared apple butter for the event, along with his children and grandchildren.

While many festival-goers took part in a variety of ritual activities, including free apple slices and sips of homemade cider, others enjoyed several new attractions featured during the event, such as the talent show. The festival also featured its second year of carnival rides, including a Ferris wheel, a Tilt-A-Whirl and several skill games.

"We have a mechanical bull that both the kids and adults love," Laycox said. "We also something new this year - a bungee trampoline. It's been one of our most popular attractions this year. There hasn't been a minute when it hasn't been occupied."

A mid-morning shower postponed the parade by a few hours Saturday, but festivities later resumed at about 2 p.m. Area residents lined the streets and watched as classic cars and tractors rolled through the city's downtown.

Laycox said Apple Fest attracts an estimated 35, 000 people each year during the three-day event. Money raised through the festival goes toward area charities and scholarships.

"People come from all over to see what Apple Fest is about," Helm said. "Earlier today, we met some folks from Florida who were in town for the game. Sometimes the festival falls during Bikes, Blues & BBQ, and we get a lot of bikers. They often end up coming back year after year."

Apple Fest winds down today at about 3 p.m. Activities will include an apple core throwing contest and gospel music.
