THE MURKY DEPTHS : NWA Fishing Report
Posted on Friday, September 5, 2008
Our crazy 2008 weather continued midweek as the remnants of Gustav slammed our area with torrential rains. Beaver Lake is near flood pool once again and muddy inflows will surely mess up fishing for a while. Oh well, it's hunting season and all this rain may actually be a good thing. Be careful out there if you decide to hit the water. (Note: The following reports are pre-Gustav. ) Beaver Lake Southtown Sporting Goods - Frank Divis reports schooling bass near Point 12. Otherwise, anglers are going deep during the day and slinging plastics and spinnerbaits at night. Crappie are biting near docks with brush. Bream fishing is good on crickets.
Hook, Line and Sinker in Rogers - Aaron Jolliff reports more of the same. There's a good topwater bass bite early but jigging spoons will work when worked through schools of shad found on a boat's sonar / fish finder. Using drop shots rigged with finesse baits is another popular option.
Hickory Creek Marina - Garland Villines says crappie are hitting jigs fished tight to brush down to 23 feet. Flathead catfish are hitting set lines baited with cut perch. Small bass are schooling and will hit a variety of minnow imitators. Beaver Tailwaters - Beaver Dam Store reports good fly action on pheasant tails, black woolly buggers, Rock Creek caddis (olive ), scuds, sow bugs (gray, tan ), Jensen minnows, Norfork Specials, San Juan worms, and crawdad patterns. The top lures are Shad Raps, Rapala Countdowns, Kastmasters (silver / blue ), and Rooster Tails (black / silver ). Bait anglers are using night crawlers, red worms, wax worms, and Power Bait (orange, yellow, white, green ).
Bella Vista Lakes - Nick Gann at Hook, Line and Sinker in Bentonville reports bass hitting jigs and plastics fished shallow. Catfish are biting stink bait and worms.
Lake Fayetteville - Jim Black says fishing is slow. Blue gill - plus a few catfish - are hitting crickets. Crappie action is slow. Bass are hitting buzzbaits early.
Lake Sequoyah - Jackie Smith reports rising, coffeecolored water. Before the rains, bass were hitting buzzbaits and spinnerbaits but most were running small. Crappie will bite a minnow or a red-headed Road Runner. Bream fishing is fair on worms. Muddy inflows might spark a catfish bite.
Upper Table Rock Lake - J. D. Fletcher reports bass biting surface lures early and then will hit plastics and crankbaits fished near points and main shorelines.
Kings River - No report available.
