A Winslow mother and her son face criminal charges for allegedly manufacturing methamphetamine out of their home.

Michael Shane Smith, 39, of 10030 Old Cabin Road, was taken into police custody Wednesday on a felony charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. Smith's mother, Sharon Gilmore, 56, was arrested Aug. 30 on the same charge.

Members of the 4 th Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Department of Community Correction conducted a parolee check at Smith's residence on Aug. 29. During the check, officers discovered items commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine in a barn / shop next to the residence. Items included a one-gallon jug of muriatic acid, ether and tubing. Outside the shed, officers discovered ammonium nitrate and anhydrous ammonia condense.

Investigators contacted the occupant of the home, Gilmore, who was on supervised probation at the time. She reportedly denied any knowledge of the items found by police, stating that they probably belonged to her son, Smith. After checking the residence further, officers reportedly discovered a larger amount of items in a camper and a vehicle parked on the property. Inside the vehicles, was a very large amount of starter fluid (ether ), several cans of camp fuel, several cans of denatured alcohol, a propane cylinder containing anhydrous ammonia, several other gallon jugs of muriatic acid, remnants of lithium batteries, pseudoephedrine tablets, empty blister packs and numerous pieces of tubing.

Gilmore told police that the residence belonged to her and that Smith lived with her but had not been home for a week. She was taken into police custody at the scene.

Smith was arrested in Tontitown on Wednesday and taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held Thursday evening on a $ 600 bond for failure to pay fines and cost. He also faces criminal charges for parole violation and has warrants out of two other agencies. He is expected to make his first appearance in the Washington County Circuit Court today.

The 4 th Judicial District Drug Task Force is made up of investigators from the police departments of Fayetteville, Springdale, University of Arkansas, Prairie Grove, West Fork, Johnson, Lincoln, Greenland, Farmington, Elm Springs and Elkins, as well as the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
