ListenUp : Rucker a rocker no more

Darius Rucker Learn to Live (EMI) Country BOf all the once-rock stars trying to postpone the slide into oblivion (hello, Jewel!), Darius Rucker’s jump to Nashville requires less strain on the imagination — certainly less than, say, Donna Summer. The phenomenon of Hootie and the Blowfish — what one writer called “revenge of the normal” — was rock with a lowercase r made by a genial, hardworking bar band. Rucker’s soulful bellow was the signature instrument, but once the gas ran out of 1994’s Cracked Rear View, even that couldn’t restart Hootie mania. You’ll be forgiven if you can’t figure out the difference between rocker Rucker and country Rucker (answer: the fiddles, silly!), but at least on Learn to Live the man flexes his funny bone (and it is Rucker; he has a co-writing credit on every song). “Drinkin’ and Dialin’” and “All I Want,” a honky-tonker featuring Brad Paisley on guitar, even come equipped with smile-inducing specifics. Even so, a stubborn dullness clings to this CD and it’s hard to muster genui - Sunday, October 5, 2008

Neighborhood watch

DESTINATION: DOWNTOWN LIVING Shorthand sells. That seems to be the guiding philosophy behind what could be called Little Rock’s “new downtown.” Just as the state Department of Parks and Tourism recently announced it would be shifting its promotional marketing strategy to showcasing individual attractions rather than selling the entire state, the capital city, in rebranding its urban core, seems to be adopting a neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach, complete with catchy brand names. - Saturday, October 4, 2008

Personal space

— Tracy M. Rogers

Daniel Keeley Where I live: I live in Fayetteville on Mount Sequoyah. It is a one-level mid-century ranch-style house that’s been updated. It’s leaning to the modern side now. It’s actually a blend of modern things and a lot of antiques from particular periods — mostly French — that complement modern furniture. - Saturday, October 4, 2008

CLICK & CLACK’S CAR TALK

TOM & RAY MAGLIOZZI

Click & Clack (Tom and Ray Magliozzi) dispense advice about cars in Car Talk every Saturday. E-mail Click & Clack by visiting the Car Talk section of www.cartalk.com DEAR TOM AND RAY: I love my 2000 VW Cabrio. It feels solid on the road, and the functioning roll bar completes the safe feeling (no, I haven’t had to use it). But I’m wondering about how safe it is when there’s lightning all around. I’ve heard that a car is safe in a thunderstorm not because of the rubber tires, but because it’s completely encased. So, does that make a convertible with a cloth top vulnerable? Am I risking my children’s lives? Do I need to get something with just a sunroof for safety and peace of mind? Do I need to succumb to my husband’s insistence that I get a (ack!) minivan? — Margaret TOM: Tell your husband to go jump in a lake, Margaret. Just not during a lightning storm. - Saturday, October 4, 2008
