Monday is the start of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. With the exception of children, the sick and the very old, devout Muslims abstain from food and drink. Muslims are also expected to refrain from smoking, sex and gambling from sunrise to sunset during this period. The holy month commemorates the time when the Koran is said to have been revealed to Muhammad. It is a time for selfexamination and increased religious devotion. — Holidays, Festivals and Celebrations of the World Dictionary
