No, that wasn’t déjà vu

Alert Readers who may have thought they were just seeing things can relax. It wasn’t just their imagination. They did see the same cartoon on this page twice last week. It was a fine piece of work by the incomparable Michael Ramirez, who’s so darned good that naturally he was fired by the Los Angeles Times, one of the many formerly great newspapers in this country. (Why is it that the best people on the payroll are dropped first ? But that’s a subject for another editorial. ) Right now we want to apologize to our ever alert—and ever indulgent—readers for having repeated the same cartoon. It was a good one, the art and perspective as distinctive as usual with Ramirez, but it wasn’t that good. Not when we have such a fine stable of cartoonists to draw from, including our own John Deering and Roger Harvell.

We could at least have given you all a fresh cartoon. The reason we didn’t is that we screwed up. There’s a long explanation, which could be boiled down to Human Error, but no excuse. We can’t even take refuge in our usual dodge and claim it was all just a typographical error.

Please forgive us. We resolve to be more careful in the future, and Just Pay Attention ! If you were irritated by the duplication, believe us, we were more than a little irritated with ourselves. And we hope you’ll continue to enjoy the artwork on this page as much as we enjoy choosing it. What an embarrassment of riches we have to choose from every day. Alas, that didn’t keep us from embarrassing ourselves.
